The climate and hydrological engine of the planet

June 22nd marks a date of fundamental importance in the international ecological calendar: World Rainforest Day. Established in 2017 by the organization Rainforest Partnership, this day is not conceived as a simple celebration of wild nature, but as a solemn call to action for governments, corporations, and citizens facing one of the most severe ecological emergencies of our time. Rainforests, distributed primarily along the equatorial belt across the Amazon basin, the Congo River basin, and Southeast Asia, represent the most complex, ancient, and vital biological infrastructure on planet Earth. Although they currently occupy less than 6% of the global land surface (compared to 14% a century ago), these biomes play a disproportionately large role in regulating the biogeochemical cycles upon which global climate stability depends.

From a thermodynamic and climatic perspective, rainforests operate as gigantic carbon sinks. It is estimated that the Amazon rainforest alone stores approximately 76 billion tons of carbon within its biomass (trunks, branches, roots) and in the underlying soils. Through the process of chlorophyll photosynthesis, tropical trees constantly absorb carbon dioxide (CO2​) from the atmosphere, mitigating the effects of global warming caused by anthropogenic emissions. But the role of rainforests goes well beyond carbon sequestration: they are the primary architects of the global hydrological cycle.

Scientists have documented the phenomenon of “flying rivers,” immense currents of air laden with water vapor generated by the evapotranspiration of trees. A single large tree in the Amazon forest can pump and release up to 1,000 liters of water into the atmosphere per day. These masses of moisture are carried by winds for thousands of kilometers, determining the rainfall patterns of entire continents. The rains that nourish the vast agricultural plains of South America, ensuring food security and water supply for tens of millions of people, depend directly on the vapor generated by the forest canopy. Altering or destroying this biological hydraulic pump means triggering catastrophic droughts at regional and continental levels, irreparably altering global atmospheric currents.

The epicenter of biodiversity and the natural pharmacy

Beyond being the Earth’s thermostat and aqueduct, rainforests constitute the largest reservoir of biodiversity on the planet. Over 50% of all known plant, animal, fungal, and microbial species live within them, many of which are endemic and found nowhere else on Earth. This extraordinary genetic density is the result of tens of millions of years of uninterrupted evolution under constant warm and humid climatic conditions. In a single hectare of Peruvian rainforest, one can find more tree species than in all of North America.

This invaluable biological wealth represents a fundamental resource not only for ecosystem balance but for the very survival of modern medicine. Tropical forests are often called the world’s largest “open-air pharmacy.” More than 25% of Western medicines currently in use, including vital anticancer agents, analgesics, antimalarials, and muscle relaxants, derive from chemical compounds first isolated in rainforest plants. Vincristine and vinblastine, alkaloids extracted from the Madagascar periwinkle, revolutionized the treatment of childhood leukemia; quinine, extracted from the bark of the cinchona tree in the Andes, was the first effective cure against malaria. Yet, to date, it is estimated that less than 1% of tropical flora has been rigorously tested by the scientific community for its pharmacological potential. Every time a hectare of forest is destroyed, we risk burning unexplored cures for diseases afflicting humanity, forever losing biochemical molecules that we could never recreate in a laboratory.

The causes of collapse: industrial agriculture and extractivism

Despite clear scientific awareness of their value, the destruction of rainforests proceeds at an alarming rate. According to data from the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the Global Forest Watch system, over the last decade, the planet has continued to lose millions of hectares of primary tropical forest every year—an area roughly equivalent to the size of Switzerland wiped out every twelve months. This ecological hemorrhage is not a natural process; it is systematically driven by highly specific macroeconomic forces tied to the unsustainable expansion of globalized agri-food and extractive supply chains.

The primary cause of tropical deforestation is the expansion of the agricultural frontier. In the Amazon and the Brazilian Cerrado, enormous tracts of virgin forest are deliberately burned (the infamous queimadas) to make way for extensive cattle ranching pastures and soybean monocultures, 80% of which are destined to become feed for intensive pig and poultry farms in Europe and Asia. In Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia and Malaysia, deforestation is primarily driven by the creation of massive oil palm plantations, an omnipresent ingredient in the food, cosmetic, and biofuel industries. In the Congo basin, the threat is fueled by subsistence agriculture, illegal logging for export to Asian markets, and devastating mining operations for precious and rare minerals (such as coltan, cobalt, and gold).

The intersection of deforestation and climate change is pushing biomes like the Amazon toward a dangerous “tipping point.” Scientists warn that if deforestation were to exceed 20-25% of the original area (we are currently around 17-18%), the forest could lose its ability to self-generate the rain it needs. In this scenario, much of the ecosystem would undergo an irreversible process of “savannization,” transforming into an arid savanna. This collapse would release tens of billions of tons of CO2​ into the atmosphere, effectively making it impossible to achieve the climate goals set by the Paris Agreement.

Indigenous peoples: the best guardians of the forest

The fight for rainforest conservation is inseparable from the protection of the human and territorial rights of indigenous peoples and local communities. Despite representing less than 5% of the global population, indigenous peoples manage, own, or inhabit territories that safeguard 80% of the world’s remaining intact biodiversity. Science and satellite data have extensively shown that legally recognized and protected indigenous lands exhibit significantly lower deforestation rates, often comparable to or better than state-managed national parks.

These communities possess ancient knowledge and ecological management practices that allow them to thrive in harmony with the ecosystem without depleting its resources. However, they increasingly find themselves on the front lines of violent conflicts against illegal gold miners (garimpeiros), logging companies, drug traffickers, and large landowners. The assassination of indigenous leaders, environmentalists, and forest rangers is a sad and constant reality in many tropical countries. Any global strategy aimed at saving rainforests must inevitably start with the legal recognition of ancestral lands, the strengthening of local communities’ land rights, and the integration of indigenous populations into international decision-making tables, recognizing them as the legitimate and most effective guardians of the biosphere.

International strategies, legislation, and consumer power

Halting tropical deforestation requires systemic action that unites international diplomacy, bold legislative reforms, and a profound shift in consumer markets. In recent years, the European Union has taken a historic step by passing the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). This revolutionary legislation bans the entry of specific commodities (such as soy, beef, palm oil, timber, cocoa, coffee, and rubber) into the European market unless importing companies can irrefutably prove, via satellite geolocation of agricultural land, that these products do not originate from areas deforested after December 2020. It is an ambitious attempt to use Europe’s commercial power to “clean up” global supply chains.

Concurrently, on a financial level, innovative mechanisms are emerging to assign an economic value to the living forest, moving past the old paradigm where a tree only has value if cut down. Initiatives like the LEAF coalition (Lowering Emissions by Accelerating Forest finance) aim to mobilize billions of dollars in public and private funding to pay tropical countries and local communities to protect their forests, monetizing ecosystem services and sequestered carbon in a transparent and certified manner.

However, the final line of defense lies in the daily choices of citizens. On this World Rainforest Day, it is vital to understand that deforestation does not happen in a vacuum; it is the direct result of global consumer demand. Choosing short supply chain or Fairtrade certified foods, drastically reducing the consumption of meat from intensive farming (which relies on imported soy), preferring FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified wood and paper, and rejecting cosmetics containing uncertified RSPO palm oil are extremely powerful actions. The future of the Earth’s green lungs is not decided solely in tropical jungles or at climate summit tables, but in the aisles of our supermarkets. Saving the rainforests ultimately means saving ourselves.
