The first Monday of 2026 opens with a European agenda that allows for no further delays. If 2025 was the year of planning, 2026 is officially the year of implementation. The European Commission has set precise milestones that will impact businesses and citizens throughout the Union starting from the coming weeks.
Here are the numbers and dates to mark in red on the calendar, based on the latest official documents from Brussels.August 12, 2026: The Packaging “D-Day” (PPWR)
The most feared and anticipated date by the packaging industry across Europe is August 12, 2026. From that day on, most of the provisions of the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) will become fully applicable in all Member States.
These are no longer recommendations, but binding obligations:
Recycled Content: The new rules impose minimum quotas for recycled content (30% for PET bottles and other plastic packaging), already driving up demand for quality regenerated polymers.
Recyclability Targets: By 2030, all packaging must be “designed for recycling,” but companies across the continent must adapt their production chains starting this year to avoid being unprepared.

Digital Product Passport: Textiles in the Spotlight This January
While the Digital Product Passport for batteries will become mandatory from February 2027, attention this month is focused on the textile sector. The final delegated acts defining the rules for the traceability of clothing and footwear are expected precisely in January 2026. This means fashion brands across the EU have about 18 months to implement digital labels that tell the life, death, and (hopefully) recycling story of each garment.
CleanTech: €5.2 Billion on the Table by April
On the financial front, Europe is serious. The Innovation Fund call is currently open with a record budget of €5.2 billionderived from the ETS system. Deadlines for European companies wanting to tap into these funds for hydrogen and industrial decarbonization are imminent:
- February 19, 2026: closing of the auctions for Hydrogen.
- April 23, 2026: final deadline for “Net-Zero Technologies” projects.
The European Challenge
The transition is no longer just “green,” but bureaucratic and financial on a continental scale. Companies that invested in traceability and sustainable design in 2025 will find themselves at an advantage. For all others, the race against time begins today.
